cultivated electronics moves into its 10th release and second of 2012 with an ep from long standing dutch electro pioneer frank de groodt under his sonar base alias. this is the 3rd landing from sonar base whose legendary first album sonar bases 1 - 4 was released on u trax in 1995 before his second release beyond hoag s object ii on daz qualye s scsi-av imprint 10 year s later in 2005. frank started out on djax records in 1994 with multiple releases as the operator and optic crux before his more recent releases as fastgraph on klakson. we attack before dawn ep gives a nod to the mid 90 s electro sound of underground resistance with 3 killer cuts from sonar base and a remix from ce label head sync 24.

part 2/3! deep house – uh killer?! dear gorge just like we know him. hardly anyone puts so much energy into a yet so low key appearing track and this is what we love him for. gorge was a history witness for our biggest light installation and the most oppulent feast, as is his right. certified ass-shaking tune with a joyous organ going hand in hand with a female vocal. there is no more to say about this track as it speaks for itself. reminiscing igors 10 minute intro in combat gear at the treibgut deluxe. some push did jonas put into this few minute collaboration track with mz sunday luv. it has to be loud, it has to run – it has to take its place on this compilation. homebased in frankfurt jonas was so fond of hannover at a time that he almost moved north. but we could not afford the hotel room for such a long time. deep house making you get rid of your jacket and shake your hips together. get yourself a drink at the bar and head for the dancefloor. nicely smooth this track is driving you into the night. the only night we actually had champagne and still could all make it to the train to hamburg in the morning.

london based welshman chamboche returns to the label that launched him with the smoke screen ep. his unquantifiable sound swerves genre classification, hovering around house but with enough musicality to please the hardened disco head. swirling pads and a bubbling bass line set down the groove, while keys fall around horns and vocals to make the lead track a refined, uplifting work out. slowly unfolding, the track is hypnotic and absorbing, showcasing the style of a producer as able to work the mind as the hips. bicep toughen up the drums and work the arpeggio, stripping down the track and bringing the chicago influence higher in the mix. while the original subtly unfolds, their remix demands attention from the outset, building to a climax then recoiling for another bite at the cherry. thinking big, krl ramps up the intensity with a bright, kinetic reworking. aimed squarely at the peak time, he harnesses all of smoke screen’s most propulsive elements to really work the floor. tucked away on the b side is the expansive mind your mind. trademark chamboche percussion is woven around a blissful riff, swelling majestically to round off the ep in slo(w) burning euphoria.

rene pawlowitz aka shed returns to ostgut ton under the new moniker the traveller and delivers the first 12 inch of this new project. under his new guise pawlowitz picks up at his roots and delivers a deep techno record made for the floor. the beats on the a-side >a 100< are fierce, the melodic synth line lifts you up while everything around appears to be burning down. the experimental first track on the b-side >ber< meanders without beats and full of broken chords around that moment of ecstasy without ever reaching a break. on the b-sides second track >bypass< rene says hello to the techno-heroes, rolls out a red carpet and shows them what he has learned. pack your bags and head for the dancefloors.

having hinted at upcoming collaborations on blkrtz over the last months in several interviews, deadbeat finally makes good on his promises offering an epic piece of heaviest dub business featuring the unmistakable vocoder stylings of canadian danuel tate of cobblestone jazz fame. title track lazy jane locks in a murderously tight 135 bpm steppers rhythm sure to appeal to fans of both the burial mix series and malas most head down exploits for dmz alike, with tates heaven streaking vocal elevating it to the realm of instant classic from the very first drop. the flipside s 909 dub meanwhile sends the originals synth and vocal lines deep into the echo chamber atop a reinforced version of the bass line and unrelenting 909 drum pattern to create the most classist, purified slice of big room dub techno you are likely to here all year.

march sees the formidable hypercolour deliver its most surprising output yet, an ep from none other than groove armada. tom findlay and andy cato need little introduction as groove armada. chart smashes, huge live tours and being part of the worldwide electronic music history aside, the duo have never lost touch with their acid house roots and have continued to be devoted to record buying, djing and the much maligned promo trawl. tom and andy have been avid followers of the label it seemed, since its inception. it was through label head jamie, meeting the guys back in 2010 at space in ibiza, and then continued communication via hypercolour promos, that led to an out-of-the-blue email requesting an informal hook up in east london and, within just a few days, a release was scheduled. that release is the >no knock ep<, four tracks that range from 808 fuelled old school cuts to low slung, moog-bassd electronic funk. each sound is lovingly crafted but there is an analog rawness throughout and every track has the sort of tweaked, off-kilter and occasionally awkward vibe that hypercolour do so well. it just takes a bit of imagination to guess what a ga release on hypercolour should sound but failing that, just check the release out as it wont disappoint.

in 2006, hip-hop was turned on its head by the arrival of chicagos kenny dennis, a proudly married, mustachioed and middle-aged rapper repping no-nonsense lyrics and a salt-of-the-earth swagger. this unlikely hero delivered a handful of classics via the album, dennehy, and then disappeared. but in 2011, kennys cult of fans were given a gift: the long-lost 1993 lp theres a situation on the homefront from his theretofore unheard boom-bap crew tha grimm teachaz. (kenny was then known as kdz, tha killa deacon. the group was briefly signed to jive records.) as it turned out, that gift was twofold. inspired by the anticon-backed release of that unearthed gem, kenny has teamed up with producers jel and odd nosdam to make a brand new record, a reintroduction of sorts, dubbed the kenny dennis ep.
